Massive turnout for Wig Wars debut
Last Friday night 13 April saw the launch of brand new event Wig Wars by Freshh at the Great Northern Hotel, Newcastle's first amateur drag competition in a long while.
In the style of RuPaul's Drag Race, 8 queens battled it out on stage with guest judges from Shag Hair and clutchingatcurls.com.au including Prada Clutch, critiquing their performances. Whilst Friday the 13th is traditionally an unlucky day for those who are superstitious, fortunately it turns out that it will only be an unlucky day for 1 of the contestants who will be booted out on the night of Heat 2 (12 May)- but not before the bottom 2 contestant "lip-synch for their life"!
Audience voting has already began with patrons casting their votes on the night for the Drag Queen they didn't want to see return. Voting will continue on GENoz.com.au up until Heat 2, so make sure you start voting! Remember, you want to vote the most boring performer out, not the most tragic - because, let's face it, a tragic queen is great entertainment!
The venue was packed shoulder-to-shoulder with a crowd of over 230 people attending Heat 1. Wayne Mason from Freshh said he couldn't be more pleased with the turnout and it was more than was expected at the venue. "The community certainly did take over the venue and it was great to see people coming out to show their support for the community and new and exciting events".
GENtv was there to record the night and interview the crowd and contestants for those who missed out, with many of the interviewed crowd saying how exciting it was to attend brand new events and how they couldn't wait for Heat 2. "Ive had such a great night - so many hot people out there. The performances were great and it's a great thing for Newcastle, I recommend it for any gay guy wanting to get out there and see something different in the Newcastle Gay Scene. It's at a new venue, something different (wig wars) spices up Newcastle", said Gary Liddell from Newcastle who attended the night's festivities.
Heat 2 is scheduled for 12 May 2012 where the bottom 2 girls will battle it out and someone will be losing their wig and going home. The 7 remaining girls will also perform on the night with guest judge Taylor Square critiquing their performances.
